The state Legislature recently approved the establishment of a special committee responsible for creating a World War II memorial in Phoenix. The Government Legislative Committee approved the motion to build a memorial hall last week, and plans to break ground on December 7 this year. The memorial hall mainly displays guns salvaged from the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, the USS Missouri battleship, and weapons used by World War II veterans. In 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and sank the USS Arizona, forcing the United States to join the war. The USS Missouri was the battleship on which the Japanese signed the surrender ceremony at the end of the Pacific War. The two are of great significance. Secretary of State Ken Bennett worked hard to secure the Arizona's gun from a group called "Salute to the Fallen Gun."
