As people reach middle-aged and old age, there are some things they cannot avoid, such as taking medicine every day. Nearly half of adult Americans cannot do without blood pressure-lowering and cholesterol-lowering drugs every day. But in the past year, the prices of some commonly used prescription drugs have skyrocketed, making them unaffordable.

Five years ago, the popular cholesterol-control drug Lipitor was around $127; now it’s closer to $240. Common rash drug Nystatin has tripled its price in the past five years. Oxaprozin, another common anti-inflammatory drug, jumped 5,000 percent, from $6.50 to $293. Even if you don’t have to pay out of your own pocket, isn’t it true that spending from insurance premiums does not mean that the wool comes from the sheep?

In fact, there are many ways to control the cost of medication. Discuss with your doctor to switch to a cheaper brand, or ask the doctor to provide a 30-day free trial of medication. There are also many online pharmacies that offer discounts... After all, for many people, monthly medication is a big expense.
