The gunfire kept ringing out, and last weekend was not peaceful (Alberta Times) Last Friday, a shooting occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, southwestern Connecticut, killing 28 people, including 20 children, the school principal and a psychological counselor. The 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza shot his mother at home before going to the school to massacre. After going to the school to kill for a while, he committed suicide before the police arrived at the scene. Law enforcement officials said it was one of the worst mass killings in U.S. history, second only to the April 16, 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech that killed 33 people. At about 8:30 that night, another shooting occurred at the Excalibur hotel-casino, a large casino hotel in Las Vegas. A man shot a woman and then shot himself. Two shootings occurred in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, killing five people including the murderer and injuring four others, including two police officers. The suspects in both cases were killed. On the same day on the 16th, an Indiana man threatened to commit murder at an elementary school near his home. He was arrested after local police found 47 guns and ammunition at his home. On the morning of the 14th, the police in Lake Sidon, Indiana, received a report that 60-year-old Mel threatened to set fire to his wife and said he would enter Jane Bower Elementary School and "keep killing people." Go and deal with it quickly. Lake Xide is located about 72 kilometers southeast of Chicago. After the murder, local governments asked law enforcement agencies to step up patrols. Schools in some areas have sent messages to parents that the schools are working on security matters, or have assured parents that schools will routinely check safety measures. Some schools declined to discuss security details, but what is certain is that schools across the country will be on high alert this week.
