Arpaio assigns volunteers to inspect local schools "Alberta Times" Monday is the first day of the semester, and Sheriff Arpaio said he has dispatched campus patrol units to patrol Maricopa County schools to protect student safety. Starting from the new semester, 520 armed security guards began to patrol around the school. They have the right to enter the school in case of emergency, but they are mainly concentrated on the outside of the school, Chief Apao said. In December, county deputies foiled a massacre at Mesa High School, according to the Sheriff's Office. At that time, a 16-year-old girl threatened to kill her high school classmates and then commit suicide. The county police successfully prevented the tragedy from happening and arrested her. The 520-person campus patrol team will focus on 52 schools in Maricopa County, and other schools will be guarded by volunteers to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
