Unbearable losses, the U.S. Post Office will not deliver letters on Saturdays The U.S. Postal Service said it will stop delivering letters on Saturdays, under a plan aimed at saving $2 billion a year. The US Postal Service, which has long been in financial trouble, says it will continue to deliver packages six days a week. The post office is expected to stop weekend delivery starting in August. Since individuals and industrial and commercial enterprises mostly use Internet services such as e-mail to exchange information, the number of letters and other e-mails has decreased. Ending Saturday mail deliveries will be part of a larger effort to cut costs. The U.S. Post Office lost $16 billion last year. It's unclear whether the Post Office can stop delivering letters on Saturdays without approval from Congress, which oversees postal services. The U.S. Post Office does not receive tax dollars for daily operations. They rely on postage fees and the sale of related products and services to support daily operations.
