Train collision New York to New Haven line will be closed for several days Federal National Transportation Safety Board officials arrived at the scene of the accident in Bridgeport, Connecticut on Saturday morning and began...
The accident occurred just after 6 pm local time near Bridgeport, Connecticut. Preliminary police investigations believe that one of the trains derailed and then collided with another train, causing more train cars to derail. Passengers took photos of the collision, and some described many people in the carriage as "flying" after being hit. Officials said it was a miracle that no one died.
Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy arrived at the scene three hours after the accident. He said the government's main concern was the condition of the injured and when the rail system would be reopened.
Malloy said that most of the injured were not seriously injured, but many carriages and rails of the train were seriously damaged. It may take until next Monday (20th) for railway services to return to normal. An MTA spokesman said the two trains were carrying about 700 people when they collided.
Fairfield police spokesman James Perez said it was not yet known whether mechanical failure, an accident or vandalism caused the accident.
