Data released by the Department of Commerce before the market opened on Tuesday showed that U.S. retail sales increased for the fourth consecutive month in July, but the 0.2% increase was less than the 0.3% market expectation. So-called core retail sales, which exclude volatile automobiles, gasoline and building materials products, rose 0.5% in July, the largest monthly increase since the start of the year. As the market digested this data, Wall Street stocks opened slightly higher and then briefly dipped in early trading. However, as the president of the Atlanta Fed stated that there was still some uncertainty in the Fed's decision to exit quantitative easing (QE), market concerns were temporarily alleviated. The three major stock indexes gradually turned higher and maintained an upward trend until the close.
