At about 2:45 in the afternoon on January 31, a second-year student from the Institute of Network Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and two Chinese students from New York University and Arizona State University were involved in a car accident on the highway outside the Grand Canyon National Park. The Chinese tourist died of excessive injuries, and the two Chinese students were in stable condition with no life-threatening injuries.
After learning the news, the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles immediately formed a task force and rushed to Flagstaff City to visit the injured. Consular Protection Officer Zhao Shousheng and Education Consul Li Liqun, who assisted in handling the accident, said that the family members of the Chinese tourists who died in the car accident have been informed of the tragic news, and consular officials are assisting the family members in coming to the United States to take care of their funeral arrangements.
The police confirmed that the traffic accident occurred at about 2:45 pm local time on the first day of the Lunar New Year, about 3 miles north of the south entrance of the Grand Canyon National Park. It was snowing when the accident occurred.
This serious car accident has caused one death and two injuries. The two injured have been sent to the hospital in Flagstaff City for treatment. Officials are currently investigating the cause of the accident.
According to the injured, a female passenger sitting in the back seat of the car, a 24-year-old tourist from Shenyang, China, died of her injuries. The two people in the car were both Chinese students studying in the United States. One of them suffered a concussion and other injuries to his arm and other parts during the car accident. The other international student, the driver at the time, suffered a slight concussion. Both injured persons are currently receiving treatment at Flagstaff Medical Center.
