The first baby conceived in a transplanted uterus in the United States is born

新华社华盛顿12月4日电(记者林小春)美国贝勒大学医学中心4日宣布,美国一名接受子宫移植手术的女性上月在该中心成功产子,这名新生儿是美国第一个在移植子宫内孕育出生的宝宝。

Baylor University Medical Center said at a press conference broadcast live on the Internet that day that the newborn was a baby boy. The mother and child are currently safe. The mother has been discharged from the hospital, and the child remains in the hospital for observation.

Giuliano Star, chief of the operation, called the news a "milestone" in a statement. "This is a wonderful moment full of love and hope for mothers who have been told they would never be able to conceive their children." The child's parents also felt "deeply happy".

A research team at Baylor University Medical Center plans to recruit 10 women to participate in a uterus transplant study. In October last year, the center announced that it had performed four uterine transplant operations, but three women developed poor blood flow and had to have their transplanted uteruses removed.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine issued a statement saying that the birth of this baby is "another important milestone in the history of reproductive medicine", but also emphasized that work in this field must be conducted under the supervision of relevant review committees.

About 1 in every 500 women in the world suffers from uterine infertility, which means that they are born without a uterus or cannot get pregnant normally due to uterine dysplasia or lesions.

Uterine transplantation is considered the only way to conceive in women with uterine infertility. The world's first uterine transplant was completed in Sweden in 2014. Previously, a total of 8 babies conceived by transplanted uterus were born, all of whom were born in Sweden.
