At 7:00 pm on February 25th, New Oriental Art School welcomed nearly 50 music-loving friends to attend a music appreciation lecture delivered by the Alberta Spring Festival Gala chief director and composer Liu Luohong. Teacher Liu briefly communicated with reporters before the lecture. He said that this lecture is all about very basic knowledge, and is designed to help everyone understand music, understand art, and live a high-quality life.
Composer, Mr. Liu Luohong, chief director of the Alberta Spring Festival Gala
The first laughter in the audience came from the simple score "2 3 2 1 2" played by Mr. Liu. When he first played these five notes, it was slow and dignified. Everyone immediately understood that it was the music they heard at the funeral. Teacher Liu plays the same score faster and faster, and the rhythm becomes more rhythmic. It seems to be familiar again. This is part of the famous song "Joyful". The same score is played at different playing speeds, and one is sad and the other is happy, which is really amazing. Through this example, Teacher Liu introduced the four elements of music: the pitch of the sound, the length of the sound, the strength of the sound, and the timbre. Under the influence of these four elements, 7 notes form a wonderful and endless musical world.
The most exciting part is the appreciation of the traditional famous song "Butterfly Lovers". At the beginning of the music, against the background of the vibrato of strings, the flute played a beautiful and gentle melody, which seemed to depict the background of the story of Butterfly Lovers on their way to school, with the bright spring scenery and the singing of birds and the fragrance of flowers. Teacher Liu Luohong introduced that the composer cleverly used two rests in the last part of the presentation to make the music intermittent and delicately depict the complex mood of Yingtai facing Shanbo who came to see him off. The lingering melody, slow speed, and infinite sadness and regret make people feel like they are seeing Liang and Zhu Shiba sending each other off. In the expansion part, the sound of bassoon, cello and gongs is used to create this eerie and very dramatic anti-marriage sequence. In the balcony party, two different timbres of the cello and violin are used, and each question and answer makes people feel like they can see the touching scene of Liang and Zhu weeping and expressing their heartfelt feelings to each other. The whole music is sublimated in the reproduction part. The flute uses gentle strength and slow speed to return the music to a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. The beautiful melody of the flute, combined with the glissando of the harp, leads people into a paradise. Against the background of strings with muted instruments, the first violin and the solo violin once again played the unforgettable love theme, as if the beams and wishes turned into colorful butterflies dancing among the flowers, telling their undying love.
Liu Luohong analyzed each paragraph in a simple and easy-to-understand manner, and also presented the basic structure of the sonata to everyone. Through the analysis, the guests present could clearly distinguish the three parts of "presentation, development and reproduction", and also understood the different roles represented by different timbres. At the end of the lecture, everyone was still interested and stayed to consult with Teacher Liu in detail about the issues they were interested in. The event received an enthusiastic response!
Mr. Liu Luohong graduated from the Chinese People's Liberation Army Art Institute (Military Arts) and studied composition under the world-famous composer Guo Wenjing (currently the director of the Composition Department of the Central Conservatory of Music of China). He has been engaged in artistic creation for 30 years and has created a large number of instrumental music, songs and dance music. He has won many awards in music competitions at all levels in China. The most recent one was the dance music "Flowing Baby" created by Mr. Liu, which won the first place (gold medal) in the children's category in the 2011 China Central Television Dance Competition.
