On the morning of September 15, 2012, a flag-raising ceremony co-sponsored by the overseas Chinese community in Phoenix City to celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China was held in the square in front of the American Veterans Affairs Department of Alberta. This event received strong support from senior local overseas Chinese leaders and various Chinese groups, and also received positive response from overseas Chinese in Phoenix. Under the early morning sunshine, nearly two hundred people participated in this event. Leaders of more than 20 associations and Chinese celebrities from the overseas Chinese community in Phoenix City came to participate. There were old overseas Chinese, new overseas Chinese, elderly people, and children. People from all walks of life in politics, business and academia gathered to celebrate the birthday of the motherland and wish the motherland more prosperity and strength. This event fully reflects the unity and love for the motherland of the Chinese people in Alberta. At nine o'clock, as the host announced the start of the ceremony, the flag-raisers quickly took their places and stood as tall as pine trees under the scorching sun. Their hearts beat with the red flags they held in their hands, and all they thought about was their love for the motherland. The American flag was raised first. Six veterans escorted the American flag into the venue with neat steps. The American flag was slowly raised amidst the American national anthem. Then the national flag of the People's Republic of China was raised. Eight flag bearers walked forward with delicate steps. The bright five-star red flag was slowly raised in the "March of the Volunteers". At this moment, it was a solemn moment in the history of Chinese people in Alberta. The loud singing of the Chinese national anthem made people excited. Sixty-three years is a short moment in history, but it has brought about earth-shaking changes in China. She has gone from the "sick man of East Asia" in the past to a political and economic power today. Despite many hardships and twists and turns, her rapid development attracted the attention of the world. Although we Chinese are in a foreign country, we share a patriotic heart. Many of them may have participated in the construction of the motherland for the first half of their lives. In their old age, they still hope that the motherland will prosper. The continuous development and growth of the motherland makes overseas Chinese proud of it. The Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Los Angeles actively supports this event. Consul General Qiu Shaofang personally sent a congratulatory letter, saying that this move embodies the deep feelings and best wishes of the overseas Chinese community in Phoenix for China, embodies the hard work and sweat of the organizers, participants and volunteers, and expresses respect and gratitude to the friends who participated in the ceremony. When Cui Zengqi, Vice Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Federation, read out this congratulatory letter, people burst into warm applause to express their birthday wishes to the motherland and their respect for the consulate. Deputy Consul General Bian Lixin, Consul Xu Cuiying and Consul Bai Dongshi of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Los Angeles also came from Los Angeles to congratulate and delivered speeches to express their gratitude to everyone for their actions in caring for the motherland despite being in a foreign land. We have not forgotten our motherland, and our motherland has not forgotten us. Our hearts are always beating together. Zhang Huafang, chairman of the Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, delivered a speech, describing the purpose and significance of this event, which reflects the love shown by overseas Chinese in the Phoenix area for the motherland and is also our gift to the birthday of the motherland. Chinese people care deeply about their homeland and vigorously promote the excellent Chinese culture, allowing it to take root all over the world. We advance and retreat together with the motherland. Chairman Zhang Huafang wishes the motherland more prosperity on behalf of the local Chinese and overseas Chinese.
