[Text: Liu Jun; Photography: Tang Jinshan] On June 29, we Chinese in Tucson are very honored and very happy to welcome Consul General Liu Jian and his wife. Also present are Counselor Yuan Dong of the Education Group and Consul Bai Dongshi for Overseas Chinese Affairs. It is worth mentioning that Ambassador Liu Jian’s wife Chen Xiaoling is also a senior diplomat and has served as the Consul General in Toronto, Canada and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
After their visit to Phoenix, they came to Tucson. Ms. Tina Y. Liao, the new president of the Tucson Chinese Association, warmly received them and took them to visit our Chinese Cultural Center in Tucson. The Tucson Cultural Center was built in October 2005. It was built by many overseas Chinese, including local Americans, who raised funds and donated land. It covers a total area of 4 acres and includes a library, computer room, tall and spacious multi-functional hall, multiple classrooms for the use of Tucson Chinese School, as well as dance practice rooms, outdoor basketball courts, etc. Seeing such modern buildings and various classrooms, Consul General Liu Jian said with emotion that it is very rare to have a Chinese cultural center of this size in the United States. It does not even exist in big cities like Los Angeles. Chinese schools in many cities rent other people's venues to teach students, but it is great that you have your own place. Consul General Liu Jian also presented exquisite Chinese embroidery as a gift to the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center.
Then, they went to Longxiangge Chinese Restaurant and had a meal with our local overseas Chinese representatives from all walks of life and student representatives from the University of Arizona. During the meeting, Consul General Liu Jian delivered a brief speech. He first commended local old and new overseas Chinese for their contribution to the inheritance of Chinese culture and traditions, then introduced the latest developments in China and Sino-US trade relations, and encouraged everyone to actively participate in investment. He then expressed cordial condolences to the students studying in other places, and earnestly educated them to study hard and abide by local laws and regulations. If they have any difficulties, they can approach the Chinese Consulate for help, telling them that the motherland has their backing. Ms. Liao Ying also spoke on behalf of the local overseas Chinese community. She expressed her warm welcome to Consul General Liu Jian and his delegation who have worked tirelessly to visit and care for the overseas Chinese in Tucson. She also introduced the unremitting efforts made by local Chinese schools and Chinese from all walks of life to promote and inherit Chinese culture over the years. She also expressed special thanks to the Consulate General in Los Angeles for its continuous support to local overseas Chinese affairs and hoped to continue to receive their continued care and support. Finally, He Wenyuan, vice president of the University of Arizona Students and Scholars Association, also spoke on behalf of the students. He said that although they were studying abroad away from their motherland, they were very concerned about the development of their motherland and often received care and love from the Consulate General in Los Angeles. The students also carried forward the spirit of mutual help and love, helped each other, and said they would study hard and understand and abide by laws and regulations.
Consul General Liu Jian and his wife were very approachable, chatting and laughing with everyone in a relaxed and happy manner, making everyone feel very cordial and like family. Finally, Consul General Liu Jian and his delegation took group photos with all participants and international students.
