Arizona’s first female Chinese-American Senator Kimberly Yee was selected as the spokesperson of the Republican Party. This is a very important position in the Senate. The last woman to hold a prominent position in the Senate was Sandra Day O’Connor, who served as the Senate’s second speaker. For 44 years, this position was held by men until today, 44 years later, Yu Yanfen, the first Chinese-American female senator in the history of Arizona, was elected as the chief spokesperson of the Republican Party. Yu Yanfen invited Sandra Day O’Connor to the scene and stood up to commend her for her outstanding contributions to civic education. Yu Yanfen said that 44 years is too long. The implementation also proves that history is constantly changing, and more women are playing a huge role in the political arena. Yu Yanfen pointed out that three of the four important leadership positions in the Senate this year are held by women: herself as the opposition party (Republican) speaker, House Majority Leader (the second-in-command in the House of Representatives) Gail Griffin, R-Hereford, and Senate President Pro Tempore Debbie Lesko, R-Peoria.
