On June 5, 2011, the Fengcheng Restaurant in Phoenix, USA, was full of guests. Nearly 300 guests attended the establishment celebration of the Kaiping Mutual Aid Association in Arizona. This is one of the most grand hometown celebration gatherings in the history of Phoenix. President Zhen Shuoqin, honorary president Guan Zongren, senior overseas Chinese leaders, Kaiping Mutual Aid Association honorary advisor Yu Wenjin, advisor Deng Chaoju and other guests celebrated this special moment together. Strengthening the connections and unity among fellow villagers and jointly serving the local Chinese community are important tasks of the mutual aid association. The entire founding meeting was quite lively, starting at 2:30 p.m. and lasting until nearly 7 p.m., and the Kaiping fellow citizens were still not satisfied. Zhang Huafang, vice chairman of the Overseas Chinese Federation, presided over the entire founding meeting. There are many talented people and wise men among the fellow villagers in Kaiping, and they all take the stage to show off their talents. There were chorus, solo, Cantonese opera, Cantonese opera, guzheng solo, BanJo performance, and dance performances, which brought an unforgettable afternoon to the guests. In addition to the exciting programs, there was also an exciting grand prize, the biggest bonus rabbit, which attracted a lot of attention, and was finally won by the young owner of Fengcheng Restaurant. Nearly a hundred prizes were also distributed on site. The most distinctive one was the Kaiping-specific snack “Zong Dumpling” that everyone could win. Overseas Chinese leader Yu Wenjin used the metaphor of rice dumplings to express the great significance of the unity of the Kaiping Mutual Aid Association. Kaiping is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese and is famous for its watchtowers that combine Chinese and Western characteristics. Most of the early Chinese immigrants in Phoenix came from Kaiping. In the early 1990s, Kaiping established a sister city relationship with Mesa City in Phoenix, which has been maintained to this day. Representatives from the sister cities of Mesa also attended the founding meeting of the Arizona Kaiping Mutual Aid Association. On the occasion of the Dragon Boat Festival, the folks in Kaiping expressed their homesickness with this special and important gathering of fellow villagers.
