Cao Jiayi: What you should know about social welfare. A few days ago, I saw in the Alberta Times that there was a vacant house for rent in Corning Building. It reminded me that my friend’s mother immigrated to the United States from Taiwan ten years ago. My friend’s family had young children, so my mother came to help take care of them. But now the children have grown up and gone to college and no longer live at home. My friends and their spouses work during the day, so the elderly mother is bored at home alone. My filial friend and his wife did not dare to apply for an apartment for the elderly for their mother, fearing that the mother would misunderstand their children as being unfilial and ask her to move out. In fact, it is the wisest choice for the elderly to live in elderly apartments. There are buses from Kang Ning and Kangle Building to the Senior Citizens Association in the morning, where there are various activities. Lunch is provided at noon, and cars are sent back to the residence after the meal. If they want to see the children, they can come to the apartment to pick up the children at weekends. Everyone has their own space. I once had this experience myself. My husband died young, and my parents came to the United States to help me take care of my young children. They had the same problem, but they went to California to visit old friends. The couple lived in a senior apartment in California. After they came back, they immediately applied for Corning Building, and they no longer misunderstood my good intentions. Apartments for the elderly are a social housing benefit provided by the U.S. government to low-income people. The rent is based on about one-third of your income and includes subsidies for water, electricity and telephone bills. Generally, older people who are eligible to apply for Alberta's medical insurance AHCCCS and food stamps will be eligible for this housing benefit. Now that the U.S. economy is in recession, there is no guarantee that the government will one day freeze this benefit again. If you are interested, you can apply at the offices in Kang Ning or Kang Le Building.
