(Contributed by the Asia Pacific Community Promotion Association) Did you know that one person commits suicide every 13.7 minutes in the United States? The latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the number of suicide deaths in the United States in 2010 was 38,364. This increase once again ranked suicide as the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. Compared with 2009, it increased by 3.9%, equivalent to 12.4 suicides per 100,000 people. The number of suicides has increased every year since 2000. This is the highest rate in the past fifteen years. Older Asian and Pacific Islander women have higher suicide rates than whites or blacks. The highest suicide rate is among Asian men over the age of 85. Suicide is also the third leading cause of death in the age group of 15 to 24 years old. The Asia Pacific Community Promotion Association is honored to collaborate with Magellan Health Services to jointly present a stage play on suicide prevention - "Silent Cry", starring Dr. James Campbell and his friends, on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at 3:30 pm. The plot tells the story of three characters who have suffered many stressful events in their lives and attempted suicide. The purpose of this play is to raise the general public's awareness of suicide prevention among relatives and friends. This play was commissioned by the Suicide Prevention Research Center and has been viewed by different audiences and is regarded as a very useful educational medium. "Silent Cry" gives the public the opportunity to participate in the normal stress that many people are experiencing today. It also exposes some of the factors, clues, causes and prevention methods related to suicide. We hope this show will inspire viewers to help people in the communities around them deal with feelings of helplessness, and hopefully prevent the necessary deaths of our loved ones. This play will be performed at the Playhouse on the Park (1850 N. Central Ave., Phoenix AZ 85004) and is sponsored by Magellan Health Services. You do not need to buy a ticket to enter, but you are kindly asked to bring two cans of food or US$5 to donate to the local food bank. Seats are limited. Please make a reservation now.
