Born in 1949 in Dalian, Liaoning Province, he once served as vice chairman of the labor union of China FAW Group Corporation. The social positions he has held include vice chairman of the Jilin Enterprise Federation of Literary and Art Circles, vice chairman of the Changchun Cultural Palace Federation, director of the Jilin Provincial Photography Association, director of the Changchun Photography Association, and deputy secretary-general of the Oil Painting Academy of Xu Beihong Painting Academy. He is currently the dean of the Photography Institute of the China Academy of Art and a director of the Imaging Art Committee of the China Academy of Art. Yu Ding has made achievements in many artistic fields. His photography works have won the 15th Jilin Province Photography Art Works Excellence Award. It has also been included in a photographic album of selected literary and artistic works in Jilin Province over the past 50 years. Many other photographic works have been published in newspapers and magazines. His songs have been broadcast on CCTV. The oil paintings he created were selected into the "First Oil Painting Exhibition of Xu Beihong Painting Academy", and many of his traditional Chinese paintings have been collected by art lovers in the United States, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.
