Ambassador Cui answered questions from Kurt Volker, former ambassador and director of the McCain International Leadership Institute, about China's economy, national defense, and relations with neighboring countries. Many guests raised issues such as air quality, human rights, one-child policy, Tibet, etc. to Ambassador Cui. Ambassador Cui said that China's economy is transforming and is no longer relying on high pollution and low-cost labor to win the economic competition. It is now stimulating the creativity of young people and providing more highly technical positions. Most of the relations between China and its neighboring countries are normal, with some local conflicts of interest. However, China still actively solves problems in the spirit of peaceful dialogue and consultation. China also opposes the research and manufacture of nuclear weapons and jointly safeguards world peace and security. At 6:00 pm on April 13, a reception for Mr. Cui Tiankai, Chinese Ambassador to the United States, was held at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex Maroon Gym at the University of Arizona. Nearly a hundred ASU Chinese students, teacher representatives and embassy staff attended the reception.

At the reception, Ambassador Cui Tiankai gave a brief speech on the situation of Chinese students at ASU, Sino-US relations, and exchanges between Chinese and American youths. After the reception, Ambassador Cui Tiankai had a close communication with the Chinese students at ASU present. Chinese international students at ASU asked the ambassador questions about topics they care about. A Chinese engineering student asked Ambassador Cui Tiankai about the employment situation of his major in the United States and China, and shared the employment confusion he currently faces. Ambassador Cui patiently answered his questions at the scene. Ambassador Cui said that respecting students' own choices, whether they work in the United States or return to China, will be conducive to promoting the development of Sino-US relations.

According to the Chinese students present, before the reception began, Ambassador Cui Tiankai had met with some Chinese student representatives from ASU individually in the afternoon. These student representatives are recommended by student organizations such as ASU CSSA and study at ASU at different stages and majors. The reporter interviewed a Chinese student representative who attended the afternoon reception. She said that she was an exchange student coming to ASU to study. During the afternoon event, she asked the ambassador about the situation of Chinese international students applying for master's scholarships.

According to an embassy staff member at the scene, Ambassador Cui Tiankai’s visit to ASU was organized by the ASU Washington Center McCain Institute. ASU CSSA Chinese Students Association is responsible for reception.
