Show the style of Chinese civilization and be a model of community construction - Ji Yazhou Modern Chinese School was invited to participate in a special performance at the Arizona State Fair. The golden autumn is the season to welcome the harvest. Recently, the Alberta Modern Chinese School, which is well-known in the Chinese community in Arizona, has also ushered in the harvest season of its long-term commitment to the dissemination of Chinese culture and community building. On the afternoon of Saturday, October 21, 2017, at the special invitation of the Arizona State Fair and Phoenix (City of Phoenix) Sister City Committee, our school organized and participated in a special performance at the "World Festival" held at the fair, and it was a complete success! The Arizona State Fair is the state's most popular mainstream public event, with more than one million attendees each year, making it easily one of the largest annual state public events in the United States.
That afternoon, the golden autumn was refreshing and the wind was sunny and beautiful! Nearly a hundred teachers, students, performers, and parent volunteers from our school who participated in the special performance arrived at the central stage area of the State Fair in advance. Led by Mr. Tao Shicheng, chairman of the school board of directors, and Ms. Wang Yulan, the principal, the performance team was cordially received by Mr. Rick Gerrard, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the City of Phoenix, the organizer of the "World Festival", and Ms. Dianna Hill, chairperson of the Phoenix-Chengdu Sister Cities Committee. In order to see the wonderful performance of our school, local people waited early near the central stage of the expo, and the audience area was packed. The actors from the Alberta Modern Chinese School did not care about the long journey and made some preparations before starting the performance.
First of all, the lovely host Yang Yuxiao, a sixth-grade Chinese student of our school, welcomed everyone in both Chinese and English and invited the chairman of the board of directors of our school to deliver a speech! Mr. Tao Shicheng introduced enthusiastically that our school has been actively participating in community activities for a long time. It is one of the first batch of overseas Chinese education model schools recognized by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of China, and is a non-profit organization highly praised by the local government for making outstanding contributions to the community. The chairman's opening remarks received warm applause.
The first program officially performed was a large-scale poetry and dance performance "Eji in Dreams". The theme soundtrack was a Mongolian song. "Eji" means mother in Mongolian. Accompanied by our school's unique school band, four young students recited the theme of the song in authentic Chinese, expressing the infinite affection of children who have left home and miss their mother far away! The entire audience quietly walked into the imaginary vast Inner Mongolia prairie along with the beautiful children's chorus and wonderful dance, and felt the heart-shaking sounds of nature from the children wholeheartedly! "The next program is a solo dance of "Shannan Liying". As soon as the host finished speaking, a slim Dai girl, wearing a hat and costume, danced a Dai dance for everyone. The young artist's graceful gait and posture reflect the unique tranquility and soothingness of Dai dance, allowing the audience and us to once again appreciate the essence of Chinese dance! The most touching ones were the suites "Looking at the Moon" and "The Horizon" sung by the parents' choir affiliated with our school. Excellent music is not just a song, every song has a story behind it. The chorus members used their soulful singing to sing songs that composed the epic of Chinese culture.
"The sun sets over the mountains, and the Yellow River flows into the sea." "There is a bright moonlight in front of the bed, and it is suspected to be frost on the ground." Good standard Chinese! The students who participated in the poem recitation to music won unanimous praise from the audience for their accurate and expressive performance. A song "Jasmine" with Chinese cultural characteristics rippled over the central stage, and the school band of the Alberta Modern Chinese School played the suite they brought for this performance. The music is clear and graceful, expressing people's beautiful wish to love and cherish flowers, and to harmonize man and nature! "Bubugao" is as its name suggests, with a brisk and exciting melody. "Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon" makes the audience feel like they are walking in the quiet night sky and their imagination is boundless! These three familiar pieces of music are classics of traditional Chinese folk music and best reflect the delicacy and depth of multi-ethnic cultural fusion. At the end of the song, the audience burst into applause!
"The next program is the dance "Jiuer"," the little host reported the last program in clear and fluent Chinese and English, which was also the finale of this performance! Only fifteen "Jiuer" were seen, wearing bright red costumes and holding emerald green silk fans, dancing gracefully. Sometimes they swayed with light steps, sometimes stretched their graceful postures, pushing the artistic expression of the entire performance to a climax.
With the young host thanking all the audience and performers, the special performance presented by the Alberta Modern Chinese School to the State Fair came to a successful conclusion! Many live audiences and individuals or organizations attending the "World Festival" activities were full of praise for the performance and asked our staff, "Which city are you from? Where is the school?" Some children even said to our school students: "You are very cool! I want to learn Chinese too!" Our school's performance was a huge success thanks to all the teachers, students, performers, and parent volunteers who participated in the performance. Special thanks go to the principal, Ms. Wang Yulan, and the chairman, Mr. Tao Shicheng, for their decisive decision-making and full support; to Vice Principal Tian Shaowei and teacher Gao Jingjing for their thoughtful and meticulous student arrangements; to Teacher Lu Lihua and Teacher Cai Shangao for their masterful artistic guidance; to the school committee and board of directors, Allan Yang, Maggie Wu, Miao Yuliang and Zhao Tao for their dedicated logistics and performance services. Without this united and sincerely dedicated team, it would be impossible for us to organize all participating teachers, students and a large number of parent volunteers in a short period of time and successfully complete the performance tasks.
Although this performance is only a short one hour, it has far-reaching significance for achieving our goal of promoting Chinese traditional culture and art in Arizona! This event is the first time the state’s largest event has invited a Chinese group to perform a special cultural performance. Its successful holding not only demonstrates the fruitful results of our school as an overseas Chinese education model school in promoting Chinese learning, but will also establish an exemplary image of our school actively promoting the participation of Chinese groups in influential public activities. It also marks a landmark step for our Chinese community to promote the broad and profound Chinese culture to different ethnic groups in the state! Arizona State Fair, we'll be back next year!
