28 mainland universities entered the top 500

The "Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)" was first released in 2003 and has been released continuously for ten years. The ranking has led the wave of international university rankings with its objective and transparent evaluation system and established the Chinese discourse system for university evaluation. Starting from this ranking, many governments and universities analyze and compare the situation of their own countries and schools, and take various measures to enhance the international competitiveness of universities.

The results of the 2012 "Academic Ranking of World Universities" show that the advantages of American universities are still very obvious. Harvard University has ranked first in the world for ten consecutive years, Stanford University and MIT ranked second and third. A total of 53 universities in the United States rank among the top 100 universities in the world. The University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford in the UK rank fifth and tenth respectively. A total of 9 universities in the UK are among the top 100 in the world. The highest rankings in continental Europe are the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and the University of Paris 11 in France, ranking 23rd and 37th respectively. The best performing universities in Asia are the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University in Japan, ranking 20th and 26th respectively.

This year, there are 28 domestic universities in the world's top 500, an increase of 5 compared to last year. Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University are among the top 200 in the world. Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University are among the top 200 for the first time since AR-WU was released in 2003. Fudan University, University of Science and Technology of China and Nanjing University ranked 201-300. Four universities, including Central South University, South China University of Technology, Tongji University and Peking Union Medical College, have been shortlisted for the first time in the world's top 500 universities.

Regarding the changes in the rankings of Jiaotong University and Zhejiang University, Dr. Cheng Ying, executive director of the World-Class University Research Center, analyzed that the two schools were very close to the 200th last year, so it is normal for them to be among the top 200 in the world this year. "The more obvious growth of Jiaotong University and Zhejiang University is the total number of international papers. Both schools have increased by nearly 1,000 articles. In addition, Jiaotong University has also increased in the number of highly cited scientists. Therefore, their rankings have improved compared with last year." Cheng Ying told reporters.

Peking University ranks among the top 100 in the science field

The 2012 "World University Rankings by Subject Field" and "World University Ranking by Subject" released at the same time show that the top three in each field and subject list are still all prestigious American universities such as Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Princeton, and MIT. In the "World University Rankings by Subject Field", 6 schools in mainland my country, including Tsinghua University, were shortlisted for the top 100 in the world in the field of engineering. Peking University ranked among the top 100 in the world for the first time in the field of science. It is also the only mainland university to enter the world's top 100 in fields other than engineering.

In the "World University Rankings by Subject", Peking University, Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University perform most prominently. Peking University ranks among the top 100 in the world in three disciplines: physics, chemistry, and computer science. Physics is the only Chinese university to rank among the top 100 in the world; Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University have both entered the world's top 100 in chemistry and computer science rankings. In addition, Nanjing University, Jilin University and Fudan University are among the top 100 in the world of chemistry; Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Northeastern University are among the top 100 in the world of computer science. In the subjects of mathematics and economics/business, no university in mainland my country can enter the top 100 in the world this year.

my country’s universities still lag behind in terms of originality

In terms of rankings, Taiwan University in Taiwan and the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong have also entered the top 200 in the world. A total of 9 universities in Taiwan and a total of 5 universities in Hong Kong have entered the top 500 in the world. Including Taiwan and Hong Kong, the number of the world's top 500 universities in China has risen to 42 this year, surpassing the number of the world's top 500 universities in the UK for the first time, ranking second in the world. However, currently no Chinese university ranks among the top 100 in the world.

In this regard, Dr. Cheng Ying analyzed that my country's high-level universities perform best in terms of the total number of international papers, and some schools have reached or exceeded the average level of the world's top 100 universities; Tsinghua University and Peking University have been able to continuously rank among top international journals such as Nature and Science in recent years. Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, University of Science and Technology of China, etc. have made breakthroughs in the indicators of highly cited scientists. However, overall, there is still a big gap between Chinese universities and the world's top 100 universities in these indicators that reflect major originality and influence. "Whether it is in terms of the originality of the paper or the number of masters with international academic influence, our number is still relatively small. These are important indicators that reflect academic innovation." Cheng Ying said.
