The Statue of Liberty in New York will reopen to the public this Sunday (28th), the 126th anniversary of the statue’s unveiling.

The Statue of Liberty was closed for a year after its 125th birthday on October 28 last year for internal renovations. The $30 million renovation project includes replacing the staircase leading to the crown. The original 354 steps will be increased to 393 steps, making the angle of the stairs gentler and less strenuous to climb.

The Statue of Liberty was unveiled in front of then US President Cleveland on October 28, 1886. This year is its 126th birthday. The Statue of Liberty was created by French sculptor Barsotti, and France gave the statue to the United States as a symbol of friendship. The statue also came to represent freedom.
