The U.S. National Park Service announced on Monday that it has approved a plan to stop the sale of single-use bottled water within 30 days. Because these single-use cans account for approximately 20% and 30% of the park’s waste recycling. At water stations, visitors can use sustainably filled containers, although the ban will not prevent patrons from bringing single-use bottles into the park. In late 2010, Park Services Director Jon Jarvis had issued a ban on single-use containers in the Grand Canyon. A former director of the park raised questions. He questioned Coca-Cola Co. and a certain disposable bottle manufacturer, which affected the quality of the park's service. However, the agency and Coca-Cola denied this challenge. Jarvis recently unveiled a policy outlining how park managers can enact a ban.
