Phoenix West Light Rail Line approved to be completed in 2023 The Maricopa County Mayors Association last week approved Sun Valley Metro's plan to expand light rail west from central Phoenix. The West Line will be the first light rail line built along a highway in the state. The route plan begins at Washington and Jefferson Streets, passes under Route 17 at Van Buren Street, then turns into the middle of Route 10, passes 47th Avenue, and expands westward along the north edge of Route 10. If funding and construction go well, riders will be able to take the light rail to areas west of 79th Avenue in 2039. Maricopa County has been committed to developing light rail transportation this year. Now, the light rail that opened in 2008 has exceeded the passenger capacity. The Methamphetamine Line, which began construction in early July, is the first step in a light rail expansion project that will extend the route from downtown Metsa to Mill Road in Tempe, and eventually northwest to 19th Avenue and Shangri-La Boulevard in Phoenix. The project is expected to be completed by 2016. It is expected that the completion of the Phoenix West Line and the Mesa Extension will bring some relief to traffic on several highways in the valley.
