November 13th Te Anau - Milford Sound - Queenstown Today we have to catch the Milford Sound cruise at 11:15 noon, so the tour guide asked us to get up at 5:45 in the morning and load the car at 6:25. Unfortunately, this hotel did not have a wake-up call service. It was already 6:10 when I opened my eyes. I got up quickly and packed my luggage in a hurry. Fortunately, I was in time to load the car. The hotel we stayed in was Fiord land Hotel, and the restaurant was very good. After breakfast we drove to Milford Sound. The weather today is very good, the sun is shining, it is the best since the whole trip. On the way, we passed Mirror Lake, which is famous for seeing the reflection of snow-capped mountains. Because we were in a hurry, the tour guide stipulated that we could only stay for 15 minutes. We walked along the plank road by the lake, looking for angles to take pictures of the beautiful scenery of the snow-capped mountains reflected in the lake. Although the scenery was beautiful, we did not dare to stay for one more minute, and finally returned to the car on time. Then the car started to drive into the mountains and reached the famous Homer Tunnel dug into the rock. The Homer Tunnel is located on a mountain 954 meters above sea level. It is a 1.2-kilometer-long single-lane tunnel with a bare stone surface. When it opened in 1954, it was the longest tunnel of this type at the time. Since it is a single lane, only cars in one direction can travel at the same time. When we arrived at the entrance of the tunnel, there was a sign at the entrance that the other party's car would arrive in a few minutes. The car in our direction is waiting at the entrance of the cave. A few minutes later, the convoy on the other side slowly drove out of the tunnel. Only when the light on our side came on did our car pass through the tunnel. After exiting the tunnel, I waited until the car rounded the bend on the mountain road and looked back. This tunnel was actually built on such a steep mountainside. It was truly spectacular.
The reflection of the snow-capped mountains in the Mirror Lake. After arriving at the fjord, we caught up with the cruise ship that was about to leave and boarded the ship immediately. The fjord is a 15-kilometer estuary cut by glaciers. The steep canyons and snow-capped mountains on both sides are more than 1,200 meters high, which is very spectacular. Milford Sound National Park is one of New Zealand's most popular tourist destinations and was called the eighth wonder of the world by the famous British writer and Nobel Prize winner Rudyard Kipling. As soon as we arrived on the boat, we were in time for dinner. We received the beef pita and cookies for lunch, but we didn't bother to eat and ran to the upper deck to look at the scenery. As soon as I arrived on the deck, I was shocked by the beautiful scenery that came to me. It was truly a well-deserved and breathtaking view - the peaks on the deep water surface were undulating and well-proportioned. The Miter Peak directly opposite rose abruptly, 1692 meters above the water. It is said to be the highest single peak in the fjord in the world. As the ship starts and changes direction, the scenery in front of you keeps changing
The Homer Tunnel (the white one is the entrance) built in the steep mountains changes its angle and becomes particularly charming. I kept pressing the shutter of the camera, and every angle the ship turned was like a new painting. It was not until the ship entered the normal channel that we breathed a sigh of relief and ran back to the cabin to have lunch. We were on the deck almost all the way, and there were endless beautiful views along the way: sometimes green canyons, towering snow-capped mountains, sometimes gurgling waterfalls, sailboats, and sea lions. We waited until the ship reached the estuary and the water became wider before the ship turned and headed back. On the way back, the captain also specially sailed the boat close to a waterfall when passing it, so that everyone could feel what it was like to be baptized by a waterfall. An hour and a half later, the boat returned to the dock. It is no exaggeration to say that this cruise was the most impressive and beautiful experience during the entire trip to the South Island.
Mitre Peak in Milford Sound
Cruise ship in Milford Sound. The six travelers in the same car also participated in a helicopter overlooking the fjord and glacier, and landed on the glacier to take photos. After leaving Milford Sound, our car will drive back to Queenstown, where we will spend the night today. After arriving, some travelers went to a restaurant on the top of the mountain to eat and enjoy the charming night view of Queenstown from the highest point of Queenstown. The others just walked around town and had dinner. I came to the pier by the lake again. It was almost dusk. The charming lake water during the day and the cruise ships docked on the pier were immersed in twilight. Only the tall Remarkable snow peaks on the other side of the lake were still reflecting the golden light under the setting sun. It was truly wonderful and breathtaking.
