Governor Jane Brewer celebrated the 2013 New Year with Chinese people in Alberta (photo) (Alberta Times News Reported by Xie Chengyan) On January 31, Luk Fook Restaurant in Phoenix City was decorated with lights and colorful decorations, filled with a strong Spring Festival atmosphere. More than 400 Chinese people were welcomed that night to celebrate the 2013 Chinese Year of the Snake. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, Secretary of State Ken Bennett, the first Chinese-American female state senator Kimberly Yee, and many Arizona dignitaries attended the event to congratulate them on the New Year. The Chinese representative, Yang Tong, a famous spinal surgeon, gave a detailed introduction on immigration policy issues as a Chinese immigrant. Local Chinese painter Fan Rong presented paintings to the governor (left to right) Huang Shijun, Fei Jian, Yu Wenjin, Jane Brewer, Yin Yanhuan, Zhang Huafang, Fan Rong, Deng Chaoju. Former Arizona House of Representatives Huang Shijun hosted the dinner. Zhang Huafang, chairman of the Greater Phoenix Chinese Overseas Chinese Association, the organizer of this event, first warmly welcomed the governor on behalf of the Chinese community. This is the first time for the governor to attend the Spring Banquet of the Overseas Chinese Federation. Governor Jane Brewer took the stage to speak, thanking the Chinese American community for its contribution to the Arizona economy and thanking everyone for their support over the years. Dr. Yang Tong, a successful entrepreneur, talked about the contribution of immigrants to the U.S. economy based on his family’s immigration experience and career struggle. Immigration promotes economic development, and they enrich the scientists and entrepreneurs that the United States needs. 3. Senior overseas Chinese leaders Yu Wenjin, Yin Yanhuan, Deng Chaoju, and Fei Jian have become the elders of the community. They started preparing the New Year's Eve dinner for the community early. Luk Fook Restaurant served well-made specialties, New Oriental Art School brought Chinese-flavored folk dances, the U.S.-China Cultural and Art Exchange Association sang beautiful songs, and painter Fan Rong presented a traditional Chinese painting of a galloping horse to the governor. With singing and dancing and discussion of national policies, the 2013 Overseas Chinese Federation Spring Banquet will become a representative page in the history of the Chinese community in Alberta.
