The latest data shows that the unemployment rate in the United States has improved slightly, and Americans seem to have some hope that the economic recession may be coming to an end. But which cities are leading the recovery? To find out, look at unemployment data from September 2010 to September 2011, factoring in overall employment changes. In addition, the economic outlook for the fourth quarter of 2011 is forecast. Using the Economic Outlook survey, we examine data from 18,000 employers in the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas, including the city's net job growth percentage. Job growth is calculated by taking the rate at which employers expect to add employees, minus the rate at which employers expect to lay off employees. Taking Riverside, California as an example, although the unemployment rate is still as high as 13.4%, it is higher than the national average. However, things are starting to improve, with its unemployment rate falling by more than 1% over the past year. The following 20 cities are showing signs of recovery.
