The largest wildfire this year, the Grapevine Fire burned 19,100 acres (Alberta Times) The Grapevine Fire in the Corona National Forest, the state's largest wildfire this year, was three-quarters extinguished on July 3 after burning 19,100 acres, Corona National Forest spokesperson Heidi Skiva said. The fire, which stemmed from a lightning strike last Thursday, prompted a partial closure of State Route 266. There was no further threat and residents were not asked to evacuate, Schiva said. There are two smaller wildfires near the Corona National Forest that were also caused by lightning strikes and have been brought under control. Here is some data on wildfires this year: To date, there have been 711 wildfires across the country, burning more than 1,988,257 acres, 135 wildfires started by lightning strikes, burning 1,025,769 acres, and the 10 largest wildfires burning more than 889,378 acres. 395,388 acres burned due to the fault of 417 people. The nation's largest wildfire of 2012 occurred in Kinder Canyon, Colorado, burning more than 17,827 acres, forcing the evacuation of more than 32,000 residents, including the U.S. Air Force Academy, and destroying the homes of an unknown number of people.
