BMW 7 faces recall after 16 car crashes, 5 injured The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on the 16th that after an eight-month investigation into a problem with the transmission control system of the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan, it was found that the problem had caused 16 car accidents and five injuries. NHTSA started this investigation in August last year. The investigation is now approaching the engineering analysis stage before the recall, but this model of vehicle has not yet been recalled. The survey covered nearly 122,000 BMW 7 Series sedans from 2002 to 2008, which are equipped with engine start-stop buttons and electronic transmission control systems. The investigation found that in some cases, drivers may mistakenly think that the car is parked when it is in neutral (N gear). Documents posted on the NHTSA website pointed out that the problem could cause the car to slide unexpectedly and cause a crash. NHTSA said in the document that BMW and investigators have received 50 complaints about this problem; one of the owners of a 2002 BMW 745LI claimed that when he parked his car at a child care center in Atlanta on March 29, 2010, the car suddenly slid forward 40 yards and finally hit the parking lot's berm before coming to rest. Fortunately, no one was injured. Another owner of a 2006 BMW 750 model pointed out that when he was parking his car on February 21, 2007, after pressing the engine stop button, the car should automatically change to a parking state, but after he got out of the car, it backed up about 100 feet and hit a lamp post. Afterwards, the dealer told the car owner that the cause of the failure could not be found. BMW spokesman Buchko said the company was cooperating with the authorities' investigation. NHTSA pointed out that the authority has upgraded the investigation to the engineering analysis stage to further evaluate the possible safety consequences of the defects complained by vehicle owners.
