16 people arrested on suspicion of smuggling in Phoenix (Alberta Times) The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 16 illegal immigrants to prevent them from being smuggled to other parts of the United States. The Sheriff's Office said a 6-year-old girl found in the group was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, while the adults were booked into jail. The group was found in a van in the northern city of Phoenix on Friday. They said they were traveling to various locations, including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Kentucky, Kansas, Texas and California. The 6-year-old said she was from El Salvador. It was unclear where her parents were or where she was going.
