The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on the 29th that it has asked Toyota to recall about 154,000 Lexus utility vehicles (SUVs) sold in the United States, including the 2010 RX 350 and RX 450 models, because the floor mats of these vehicles may jam the accelerator pedal, causing the vehicle to accelerate without warning (surge). NHTSA may also investigate whether Toyota reported problems to the agency promptly and promptly. This recall action shows that the safety issue of "foot pads blocking the accelerator", which has seriously damaged Toyota's brand image and caused a sharp decline in sales since 2009, is still lingering. This problem has led Toyota to recall more than 14 million vehicles worldwide so far. NHTSA said it reviewed consumer complaints and relevant information provided by Toyota and made the decision to require Toyota to recall the aforementioned vehicles. It said owners of the aforementioned SUVs should remove the driver's seat floor mats and go to dealers for repairs quickly. Toyota said in a statement: "Car owners will receive a recall notice sent by first-class mail in early August this year. Lexus dealers will repair the problem for free for car owners." Experts recommend that car owners should apply the brakes and shift into "neutral" (N) or shut down the engine if their car suddenly swerves. NHTSA also said it may launch an investigation into whether Toyota notified the agency in a timely manner. In a series of earlier recalls, Toyota was fined a total of 48.8 million yuan for failing to notify them in a timely manner.
