The Tempe Elementary School District has to pay $150,000 in compensation for age discrimination (Alberta Times) The Tempe Elementary School District violated a federal law and must pay more than $148,000 to 49 teachers and staff who retired in 2008. The lawsuit states that the school district gives more benefits to employees who retire early, allowing teachers over 60 years old to use 43% of their original salary to buy out their teaching experience, and teachers under 60 years old to use 52% of their original salary to buy out their teaching experience and retire early. After the incident was exposed, he was sued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in a district court. After losing the case, he was awarded compensation. Tempe Elementary School Superintendent Chris Busch admitted that the school district board knew that discrimination may be involved before making the decision, but the district calculated seniority based on their age plus annual leave to save the district financial expenses. District Attorney Mary Jo O'Neill said the Tempe Elementary School District's approach is to encourage early retirement. According to the school district’s original regulations, employees who retire early can have their medical expenses reimbursed early.
