Arizona joins nine other states in raising their minimum wage starting on New Year's Day, with our state increasing its minimum wage by 15 cents this year to $7.80 an hour.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state's cost of living index increased 1.7% from 2011 to 2012.

In addition, Colorado, Florida, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington state also raised their minimum wages in the New Year, with Rhode Island increasing the most by 35 cents, bringing the minimum hourly wage to $7.75.

The federal 2012 minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, but each state has its own standard. On a state basis, the national minimum wage is in Arkansas, which is $6.25 an hour, and Washington state, which has the highest hourly wage of $9.04 in 2012. This year it was adjusted to $9.19. San Francisco has the highest hourly wages on a city-by-city basis, with a minimum wage of $10.55 an hour in 2013.
