Just a week after a shooting case that killed 10 people and injured 9 people at a community college in Oregon, another fatal shooting occurred at Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Arizona in the early morning of the 9th, leaving 1 dead and 3 injured. The 18-year-old gunman has been arrested by the police.
Cindy Brown, director of public relations at Northern Arizona University, confirmed that the shooting occurred in the parking lot outside the Mountain View Hall dormitory on the Flagstaff campus in the early morning of the 9th. The police received a call at around 1:20.
Campus Police Chief G.T. FOWLER confirmed that 18-year-old freshman Steven Jones opened fire after a confrontation between two groups of male students, killing one person and injuring three others. Within minutes, everything calmed down. The police had arrested Jones.
The injured were taken to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment. Fowler could not yet determine the conditions of the survivors but said each had gunshot wounds.
The school's official website stated that this was an "isolated and unprecedented" incident. The campus was in stable condition and was not blocked. Courses on the 9th were conducted normally.
Student Maria Gonzalez said that she thought it was firecrackers when she heard the noise at first, "I was studying for a test at the time, and I saw two people running outside the window. That's when I realized it was not fireworks but gunshots. I couldn't feel safe where I was studying."
Megan Doyle, another junior who had gone to bed. Aardahl said she was awakened by a text message sent by the school warning of the shooting, and the students were a little panicked. "This is a huge community, so everyone wants to make sure each other is safe."
University police are working closely with the Flagstaff Police Department to further investigate the case.
Northern Arizona University plays an important role in Flagstaff, a city in the northern part of the state. This 4-year public university has more than 25,000 undergraduate students.
Arizona is an open-carry state where voters have strongly opposed gun control measures in the past. Northern Arizona University generally prohibits firearms but allows guns to be stored in cars.
The shooting occurred on the same day that US President Obama visited Oregon to meet with the families of the victims and the injured in the community college shooting. On October 1, 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer, wearing a bulletproof suit and carrying six guns, entered Umpqua Community College and opened fire on school personnel, killing eight students and one teacher and injuring nine others. He then exchanged gunfire with police who rushed to the scene and eventually shot himself.
