The 10 U.S. states with the most serious alcohol abuse among teenagers. Recently, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its 2011 surveillance study on youth risk behaviors. The annual survey looks at unhealthy behaviors among students in grades 9 to 12. More than one-third of U.S. high school students drink alcohol, and more than one-fifth of teenagers say they have drunk heavily in the past 30 days. According to the report, "24/7 Wall Street" found out which states in the United States have the highest ratio of teen drinking binge drinking. In the 10 states on the list, at least 23.5% of teenagers surveyed reported drinking at least five alcoholic beverages within a few hours in the past 30 days, compared with the national average of 21.9%. In Arizona, the figure is as high as 26.5%. In these areas, relatively few students under 13 drink alcohol for the first time. In addition to other risky behaviors, such as smoking and drug abuse, alcohol abuse can also put lives at risk, and drinking and driving is a serious problem. Of the 10 states on the list, 6 have serious cases of drunk driving. For example, among high school students in North Dakota and Wyoming, 11.7% of respondents reported having attempted drunk driving at least once or more in the past month, the highest rate in the United States. Surveys have found that drinking and driving under the influence of high school students are often also local adult problems. In Wisconsin, 21.6% of adults reported binge drinking in the past 30 days, the highest rate of any region. Most traffic fatalities in these areas involve drivers whose blood alcohol levels are found to be above the legal limit. Data on risky behaviors, including drinking and drug abuse among high school students, also looked at other types of health-related behaviors, such as depression, as well as 2009 drunk driving fatalities data provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation to find the 10 states with the worst teen binge drinking. The 10 states are: Arizona, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio and Texas. Among them, the alcohol abuse rate among teenagers in Alberta is 26.5%, the drunk driving rate is 9.3%, and the proportion of people who drink alcohol before the age of 13 is 21.3%.
