The 10 most hated industries among Americans (Alberta Times) A new poll conducted by Gallup shows how Americans view one of the nation's 25 largest industries, whether positively, neutrally or negatively. About 73% of respondents considered computer work to be the most positive industry. On the other hand, only 22% of Americans view banking as a positive industry, and more than 60% of Americans dislike banking. Most of the major industries surveyed by Gallup involve spending on discretionary items. Four of the industries that responded most positively were the Internet, restaurants, retail and computers, activities that nearly all Americans use primarily for leisure. Conversely, the industries that received the most negative responses were those considered essential, such as banking, oil and gas, and pharmaceuticals. Many industries, such as oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and the legal field, have a negative image in the American mind. In recent years, the healthcare industry has changed, with positive feedback increasing from 27% in 2011 to 42% in 2012. Other industries on this list, such as banking and real estate, have not always had a strong negative image, however, have become increasingly disliked in recent years, probably primarily as a result of the subprime mortgage crisis. The negative image of banks has been the largest increase in recent years, from 23% in 2001 to 53% in 2012. The 10 most hated industries by Americans are: No. 10 advertising and public relations, No. 9 film industry, No. 8 television and radio industry, No. 7 legal field, No. 6 electric and natural gas utilities, No. 5 pharmaceutical industry, No. 4 real estate, No. 3 health care, No. 2 banking, No. 1 oil and gas.
