In fact, for Americans who for whatever reason cannot go to college, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of high-paying jobs that require nothing more than a high school diploma.

"24/7 Wall Street" reviewed the 2011 Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational profile data to find the highest-paying jobs that don't require anything more than a high school diploma.

For the vast majority of high-paying jobs, a college degree or above is a prerequisite.

In 2011, of 185 job categories, only 16 jobs with a median salary of at least $60,000 had entry requirements that did not require a college degree or above.

For 24 of the highest paying job opportunities, one must have a bachelor's degree and, in many cases, even a master's or doctoral degree.

There are only a handful of high-paying positions that only require a high school diploma to join. Most start from lower positions and gain opportunities for promotion over time.

Among the 10 positions, 5 are supervisor or manager positions.

In addition, many of these high-paying jobs receive larger compensation mainly because of the dangerous working environment or extremely unfavorable working conditions.

Subway operators, for example, are paid a median annual salary of $63,000 and work long hours and shifts underground. Elevator maintenance workers and nuclear power plant operators, whose jobs can also be life-threatening, receive relatively higher salaries. To identify the types of high-paying jobs that don't require a college degree, 24/7 Wall Street looked at data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment Statistics to identify the jobs with the highest average annual salaries and to find out where job growth is expected to be over the next 10 years.
