1/10 adults in Los Angeles are illegal immigrants, a staggering proportion. On Tuesday, a report from the University of Southern California showed that nearly 1/3 of adults in Koreatown and some other places in the south of Los Angeles do not have legal resident status. Citywide, about 1/10 of the adults are illegal immigrants, but most have already settled down. Half of the illegal immigrants have been in the United States for 10 years or more, and 12% of the illegal immigrants have purchased their own properties; 1/5 of the illegal immigrants have their own children after coming to the United States. Manuel Pastor, one of the authors of the report, said, "Many children have at least one parent who is an illegal immigrant, which fully illustrates the complexity of this generation of immigrants." "In addition, the length of time these illegal immigrants have lived here shocked me." While Congress is discussing immigration reform in full swing, California's immigration issues have also attracted widespread attention. There are currently 11 million immigrants in California, a quarter of which, more than 2.6 million immigrants, are illegal immigrants. In Los Angeles, 63% of illegal immigrants are from Mexico, 22% are from China and the United States, and 8% are from the Philippines, South Korea and China. Among illegal immigrants in the Bay Area, the proportion of Asians is as high as 23%. The average annual salary of illegal immigrants living in Los Angeles is $18,000, while the annual salary of native-born American residents is $47,000. Half of the illegal immigrants work in factories, restaurants, construction sites and other places. Only 33% of illegal residents have health insurance. The survey also shows that nearly half of illegal immigrants only have a high school degree, and 60% of them cannot speak English fluently. The entire survey shows the unstable state of illegal immigrants. "They are unable to participate in normal social activities. Such a purgatory life cannot last long." The author of the survey also called on the public sector to open more English training classes to provide skills training for these immigrants to broaden their employment areas.
