T-Mobile USA has 33.2 million users and is the fourth largest mobile operator in the United States. MetroPCS has 9.3 million users, ranking fifth. Even if the two companies merge, their scale will still be smaller than that of the third largest operator Sprint Nextel.
Last year, AT&T, the second largest mobile operator in the United States, prepared to acquire T-Mobile USA for US$9 billion. The deal ultimately fell through due to regulatory pushback.
T-Mobile and MetroPCS are relatively small, so regulators may give them a green light. On Wednesday, Deutsche Telekom will vote on the acquisition. MetroPCS currently has a market value of approximately US$4.2 billion.
