>Power expansion will create a high-tech brand district. The expansion of Power Road at the junction of Mesa and Gilbert is much more than adding two busy lanes. Construction starting this month on the paved road to Mesa is intended to benefit a high-tech hub that will be home to many high-tech jobs. The $28.6 million project, which includes construction of a high-tech district called the Power Knowledge Corridor, will include a new street sign dividing the area from Mesa from Highway 202 to Pecos Road. Vice Mayor Scott Meuse said the Knowledge Corridor plan will bring together businesses in Arizona's industrial, financial and educational communities. This "knowledge corridor" signage will facilitate the dissemination of information between residents and visitors. "Not only is it an important sign on the ground, but it also shows that this is a place for high-tech development, and it helps let our residents know what the city's economic development strategy is for the area," Summers said. The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is the "engine" of this corridor, integrating with ground transportation networks, aerospace companies and defense research laboratories. The city hopes other high-tech companies and research activities will cluster in the area, which will also be home to Arizona State University's Polytechnic Institute and other higher education institutions. The Power Knowledge Corridor extends north to Mesa Community College's McKellips Road campus, and Summers said it will likely take several years to bring the entire area to prominence. The Power Road project will widen the street to six lanes. This work will continue into the fall of 2013. Maricopa County government will fund about 70 percent of the funding, with the remaining costs shared equally between Mesa, Gilbert and Maricopa counties.
