The American data center expert IO is planning to expand a large three-story data center at its campus in Phoenix, Arizona, where the IO headquarters is also located.

The third phase of the data center deployment will provide more than 100MVA power supply capacity and gradually deploy data center modules ordered from its subsidiary Baselayer.

Construction work will begin at the end of 2016, and IO hopes to welcome the first customer of the data center in 2017.

Large-scale module deployment

IO company was established in 2007 and is an industry pioneer in data center modular design. As of 2015, the company operated two distinct lines of business - one providing outsourced hosting and cloud services, and the other selling data center modules to its competitors.

Early last year, IO split into two. BaseLayer began to take over the data center modular business, while IO continued to manage data centers in Arizona, Ohio, New Jersey, Singapore and London.

As expected, IO operates the world's largest modular data center in Edison, New Jersey.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix campus has become one of the largest multi-tenant outsourced colocation data centers on the West Coast, with more than 120MW of core power.

In early February, IO purchased approximately 9 acres of land south of the existing facility and plans to start construction before the end of this year. IO envisions building a building with BaseLayer core modules on top, and says this is the first of its kind in the industry.

When construction is fully completed, the expanded building will be able to accommodate more than 600 independent data center modules.

"The IO data center campus in Phoenix has been extremely successful and we have scaled up incredibly quickly to respond to customer demand," said IO President Tony Wanger.

"We build and operate the most efficient, sustainable data centers for the world's most demanding customers. Our newest data center will set the standard for state-of-the-art infrastructure, supporting outsourced hosting and cloud services. It is also a testament to our company's commitment to investing in the communities where it belongs."
