Position statement of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Federation of Alberta on the Asian subdivision resolution in Alberta (AZ SCR 1012) 1. We, the Hualian Federation of Alberta, like the majority of Chinese and overseas Chinese, are very concerned about the Asian subdivision resolution proposed by our state Senator Ms. Yu Yanfen in the Alberta Legislature. 2. We oppose this Asian subdivision resolution because it violates the founding spirit of fairness and justice in the United States and runs counter to the purposes of freedom, equality, and union mentioned in the American Loyalty Pledge. At the same time, we are also wary that such information may be used for other political purposes. 3. Each race has its own unique circumstances. It is fundamentally wrong and illogical to use legislation to subdivide about 5% of the population into more than a dozen groups, while at the same time roughly classifying nearly 95% of the population into only three or four categories. 4. We understand and support the purpose of organizations such as APCA to serve the Asian population and their unremitting efforts towards this goal. However, we do not believe that mandating the ethnic background of Asian people on various forms issued by the government will have a truly beneficial effect on the prevention and treatment of diseases among Asian people. UCAA Board Statement on AZ SCR 1012 1. We share the concern of many in our community who recently raised their voice regarding SCR1012 being introduced in Arizona by state senator Kimberley Yee ( http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/53leg/1r/bills/scr1012p.pdf ). 2. We oppose AZ SCR 1012 because it is incompatible with the American spirit of equality, fairness, and indivisibility.. United we stand, divided we fall. Meanwhile, we are vigilant about its potential political ramification. 3. People are universally diversified and individually unique. Through the legislature in singing out roughly 5% of the population and reclassifying that small group into multiple subgroups while ignoring the differences among the 95% of the population are fundamentally flaw and illogical. population, by identifying their special needs in order to modify their disease prevention and management, and to adjust resource allocations. However, we do not believe that simple country-origin registration mandated by government based agencies will have any meaningful and constructive impact on this issue.
