New research shows that 75% of Americans use their phones in the bathroom. Market research firm 11mark surveyed 1,000 Americans and found that men and women use mobile phones in the bathroom at roughly the same rate, but men seem to prefer using their phones in the bathroom. 30% of men and 20% of women agreed with the statement: "I have to take my phone with me when I go to the bathroom." More than half of the respondents (63%) answer the phone in the toilet, and almost half (41%) do so in the toilet. But there's more: a wall-mounted phone in the bathroom can perform all the functions of a smartphone. 76% of respondents read text messages in the bathroom, and 39% browse the web. Men are more likely to be busy working in the bathroom: 20% of men said they answer work-related calls, compared with only 13% of women. As expected, the young Generation Y (born after 1981) is the pacesetter in the "Mobile Everywhere" movement, with 91% of the younger generation saying they use their mobile phones in the toilet. However, the older generations are not far behind: 80% of Generation But with smartphones online, users can do more than just browse the web. 16% of the younger generation said they would shop online from the toilet. iPhone users are especially likely to browse the web and shop online in the bathroom: 22% of iPhone users have made online purchases in the bathroom, while only 10% of U.S. mobile phone users shop online. Nicole Burdette, the person in charge of 11mark, said: "Just like the slogan in the bathroom says, this study also confirms what we all know: the last place of privacy is no longer private." The study results found that in the process of using mobile phones in the bathroom, health safety in the high-tech era has also been hit. 92% of mobile phone users said they wash their hands after using the bathroom, but only 14% said they clean their phones.
