Characters of the Overseas Chinese Community (5) - Deng Chaoze Know your horse power from afar and see people's hearts over time. Deng Chaoze was born in 1921 in Hulong Baoan Village, Kaiping County, Guangdong. He came to the United States in 1940. He first went to Mesa City and worked in a grocery store run by his uncle. He was also enrolled in Western High School and worked part-time. When World War II broke out, he went to work in a defense shipyard in California, and later took part in cultivating the Japanese estates that had been abandoned by the war until the end of the war. Since 1949, he partnered with his brother Deng Kansheng and opened grocery stores in Feinian City and Mianshuibu until his retirement in 1971. Deng Chaoze and his wife are loving, their children are well-educated and successful, and their grandchildren are well-behaved and smart. After he retires, he can rely on his savings to enjoy a comfortable life. However, he was enthusiastic about working for the overseas Chinese community and spared no effort to serve his fellow countrymen. He has been serving in the local overseas Chinese corps since 1971 when he served as the Chinese secretary of Feinedeng Gaomi Office. He has successively served as Chairman of Feinian's Deng Gaomi Office, Chairman of the Yingduan Industrial and Commercial Branch, Chairman of the Chinese American Federation, Chairman of the Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations, Standing Committee Member of the Southwest Branch of the National Chinese Welfare Association, General Director, etc., and he is still the consultant or speaker of these groups. In the past twenty years, he has done a lot of useful work for the local overseas Chinese community. As early as during the preparation and expansion of the Feinedeng Gaomi Office, he and other clan elders actively carried out fundraising, planning and construction work. In the Yingduan Industrial and Commercial Branch of Fei Ni, he carried out services such as safeguarding the rights and interests of the Chinese and obtaining driving certificates for overseas Chinese. In the Fei Ni Chinese Chamber of Commerce, he strengthened communication with the government and people from all walks of life to communicate with Chinese business development channels, and even set up Chinese cancer prevention and medical insurance services. In the process of planning the establishment of a meeting place and opening a Chinese school in the Fei Ni Overseas Chinese Federation, he was an active advocate, service provider and supporter of this series of things that were beneficial to overseas Chinese. In 1986, the 11th Congress of the National Chinese Welfare Association was held in Las Vegas. Deng Chaoze, who was the general director of the association at the time, was responsible for organizing the conference. With the full support of the local overseas Chinese leaders, he worked together to make the entire conference work properly and meticulously arranged, making the conference an unprecedented event and a complete success, earning endless praise from representatives from all over the country. Deng Chaoze has always been concerned about working hard to improve the political status of Chinese in American society and supporting Chinese participation in politics. In 1986, Chinese Deng Weili ran for the Mesa City Senator. As chairman of the Federation of Overseas Chinese Leagues, he mobilized local overseas Chinese to provide support and quickly raised a campaign fund. Finally, Deng Weili was elected in an area where there were not many Chinese people and served as the deputy mayor of Mesa City for two terms. Deng Chaoze graduated from the famous Kaiqiao Middle School in his hometown in 1939. He has deep feelings for his teachers and classmates at his alma mater. In 1984, he and several classmates in the United States initiated the establishment of the "Kaiqiao Middle School Alumni Association", thus contacting many alumni, developing friendships, and having a good influence. Deng Chaoze not only enthusiastically served the overseas Chinese community, but also enthusiastically helped fellow villagers and handled various matters within his ability. An old gentleman told reporters: A few years ago, he turned to Mr. Asawa for help in order to obtain legal residence status in the United States. He was very happy to provide sincere help. Every time he goes to the Immigration Bureau to go through the formalities, he not only drives to pick him up, accompanies him as a translator, fills out forms on his behalf, but also buys him coffee and lunch. After the deed was accomplished, he received no penny. It shows that he enjoys helping others. Horsepower can be seen from a distance, and people's hearts can be seen from time to time. Mr. Chaoze has served the overseas Chinese community for twenty years. It is believed that his achievements should be recorded in the history of local overseas Chinese.
