Justice Department officials said on the 9th that a reward of $1 million was offered for the capture of five Mexican border suspects who killed Border Patrol Agent Boon Terry in the mountains south of Tucson.
Patrolman Terry's death has become the centerpiece of a "fast and furious" congressional inquiry into the ATF's gun-trafficking investigation. Disagreement between congressional investigators and the Justice Department over the documents prompted Attorney General Eric Holder to be held in contempt of Congress last month. Despite the controversy, details about Terry's murder were not revealed until today.
On December 4, 2010, Terry and other patrol officers were trying to stop several people entering the United States from Mexico when they tripped over an electronic sensor implanted in the southern Arizona desert, Justice Department officials said, according to information from a news conference in Tucson. When federal patrol officers fired at these men, they used beanbag bullets, not real bullets. These people were confirmed to be "border gangsters." They then opened fire, and Patrolman Terry was killed in the crossfire. One of the criminals was shot in the foot and was detained. While other patrol officers tended to Terry, the other four suspects fled.
Regarding the five people who killed Terry, they were charged with first-degree homicide, second-degree homicide, conspiracy to commit robbery to interfere with commerce, attempted robbery to interfere with commerce, using and carrying a weapon in a violent crime, assault on a federal officer, and prohibited possession of weapons. The Department of Justice announced that the FBI was offering a reward of up to $1 million for the arrest of the four fugitives.
Terry is considered a very dedicated patrol officer, and Terry's family also said that only when the murderer receives a just trial can the spirits of the dead and the hearts of the living be comforted.
This announcement is considered an important step to bring justice to Patrolman Terry and his family, and to draw public attention to find the hiding place of the remaining four.
