The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on the 20th that General Motors (GM) will recall nearly 250,000 recreational vehicles (SUVs) in the United States to eliminate the risk of vehicle fires. The recall includes five 2006 and 2007 SUVs: Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X. GM notified NHTSA on the 15th of this month that there is a problem with the circuit system of these SUVs. Salt water formed by snow salt used to melt snow in winter may penetrate into the driver's door and cause corrosion, and may cause a short circuit in the circuit board that controls the electric locks and electric window switches, causing the locks and window switches to malfunction. GM said that this situation is more likely to cause the circuit board to overheat, causing the components to melt, emitting odor, smoke or catching fire. So far, 28 incidents have occurred, but no one was injured. NHTSA said GM is still formulating a recall plan and has not yet notified relevant vehicle owners. Only vehicles sold or registered in snow belt states are affected, including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington.
