The latest survey shows that Maine has become the safest state in the United States. According to the report, although Hollywood and the news media often portray the United States as a melting pot filled with gangs and rampant crime. On Tuesday, the Peace Index released by the Institute for Economics and Peace showed that the United States is safer today than it was 20 years ago. According to the study, direct violent crime rates have dropped significantly over the past 20 years, with the homicide rate halving since 1991. Some states are safer than others, with Maine at the top of the Peace Index, Louisiana at the bottom, and Alberta at 46th. Law enforcement spends $460 billion each year to curb violence, and it costs each taxpayer $3,217 to lock up criminals. Steve, director of the Institute for Economics and Peace, said: "This study does show that the United States is safer than everyone thinks." He also said that the media plays a role in shaping the image of violence in the United States. "Things are complicated, and some politicians who advocate tough law enforcement policies find that their plans resonate with people who need to feel safe." The other safe states on the list are Vermont (No. 2), followed by New Hampshire, Minnesota, Utah, North Dakota, Washington, Hawaii, Rhode Island and Iowa. In addition to Louisiana, the least safe states are Tennessee, Nevada, Florida, Arizona (46th), Missouri, Texas, Arkansas, South Carolina, Mississippi and Alabama. Arizona ranks at the bottom, and cities in Alberta are not ranked high either. The Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale metropolitan area ranks 20th, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the most peaceful metropolitan city. Studies show that local factors, such as New York and New Jersey, which have large police presences, greatly influence safety. The South is the most unsafe place in the United States, with the highest rates of violent crime, the highest rates of criminal incarceration, and the highest gun ownership rates.
