The latest housing data released on Tuesday showed that Arizona ranked sixth in the number of bankrupt homes (45,278). The number of bankrupt homes in July this year was significantly lower than in July 2011. California has the most bankruptcies with 118,424, followed by Florida with 90,046 and Michigan with 61,285.

That means 32,722 city-wide homes went bankrupt during that period — the second-highest number among the 25 major metropolitan areas. Topping the list is Atlanta, with 36,346 bankruptcies between July 2011 and July 2012, according to CoreLogic records.
Nationwide, almost 795,000 homeowners have lost their homes, and the situation is gradually improving. For example, there are currently approximately 58,000 housing bankruptcies completed nationwide, compared with 69,000 in July 2011.
