"A Detailed Description of Red Mansions" Editor's Note: The song music of the 87 version of "Dream of Red Mansions" was written by the famous composer Wang Liping based on the lyrics of "The Twelve Hairpins of Jinling" by Cao Xueqin. It took more than four years to write, among which "The Song of the Burial Flowers" took the musician almost two years. Its songs, performed by Chen Li, a music wizard, have almost become eternal songs in the hearts of fans. In order to recreate the beauty of the Red Mansions songs, the Tucson Huasheng Chorus in Arizona and the Confucius Institute at the University of Arizona jointly organized the 2013 Mid-Autumn Festival Concert of Dreams of Red Mansions (held on September 20 and September 21). Wang Liping and Chen Li will attend the concert, and Chen Li will also serve as the lead singer of the chorus. This is the first time Chen Li has performed the song of Red Mansions since the TV series "Dream of Red Mansions" was aired in 1987. In view of the lack of understanding of the story of Dream of Red Mansions by overseas audiences, this column specially invites experts to introduce and comment on the story and characters of Red Mansions. We also hope that this will inspire more Chinese friends.
Tucson Huiming Zilingzhou is Jia Yingchun's residence in the Red Mansion Courtyard. Because Baochai used Lingzhou as Yingchun's pen name in the Poetry Society, Zilingzhou has an inseparable relationship and complex with Yingchun. Let’s first talk about Jia Yingchun’s background. Yingchun's father is Jia She, and she is a biological brother to Jia Zheng (Baoyu's father). If we don't mention the reason why her mother is a concubine, she is at least cousin to Baoyu. In addition, she has been rubbing shoulders with Baoyu and the girls since she was a child. Although her relationship is not as good as Yuanchun (Baoyu's biological sister) and Tanchun (Baoyu's half-sister), she still has a deep relationship with Baoyu. But the temperament of the second lady of the Jia family is very different from that of the eldest lady Yuanchun and the third lady Tanchun. She is not very old, but she seems to have seen through all the worldly affairs. She doesn't get angry when things are stolen, she doesn't feel pain when she is pricked by a needle, and writing a poem is like plain water. Girls often do riddles but she has never guessed them. I heard that she can play chess, but I have never seen her win against anyone. The young boy named Xing'er dared to call the second young lady of the Jia family "Er Mu", but he never saw her feel inferior and pity for her unlucky and lack of talent. This shows Yingchun’s indifferent character. The formation of Yingchun's temper is related to her father Jia She, who is not proud of herself. This father not only makes people not proud, but also makes people ashamed. Although Jia She was the eldest son of Jia Mu, he neither pursued a career in officialdom nor did he seek profit from business. Even when he was old, he would look askance at young maids and had no other skills except focusing on their looks. This kind of person is frowned upon in any society. With such a father, how can he hold his head high in the Red Mansion Courtyard during the Spring Festival! This father even married his daughter Yingchun to an officer who was born in the army to pay off his debt. As a result, Yingchun was tortured to death a year after her marriage. Lack of talent and low status have always been excuses for being discriminated against. In the Red Mansion Courtyard, this is an unspoken rule that everyone knows very well. But as a lover, Baoyu never thinks so. His famous saying, "Daughters are flesh and blood made of water, men are flesh and blood made of mud" has made countless female readers feel very familiar. Baoyu is worthy of women's respect for him, because in his heart, "the word 'daughter' is extremely noble and pure, even more noble than the auspicious animals, rare birds, exotic flowers and plants." In his world, it is daughters who are "refreshing"; men are all "stinky". Therefore, girls have never had a high or low status for him. He doesn't care whether you are a concubine or a maid. Therefore, after Yingchun passed away, Baoyu came to Zilingzhou Courtyard, saw the old things, and was filled with emotion. He wrote the song of Zilingzhou in memory of Yingchun. The autumn wind in the pond was cold one night, and the red jade shadows of lotus flowers were blown away. Victory is sad, heavy dew is heavy on the slender stems. I can't hear the sound of playing chess in the eternal day, and the chessboard is stained with mud. The ancients said farewell to friends, but now I treat them as brothers!" I treat cousins who are common people and have average talents. This song affirms the status of Yingchun, a tragic little figure in the Red Mansion Courtyard, but it enhances Baoyu's personal charm. It is easy for people to forget a girl who was unlucky in her life and passed away so miserably, but Baoyu did not forget her, and the readers also gained special respect for Baoyu. When Zilingzhou Song appeared in the 79th chapter of "Dream of Red Mansions", the prosperous and joyful Yinggeyanwu in the courtyard had ended, girls were getting married and dying, and the family was in ruins. Cao Xueqin asked Baoyu to write this song to mourn and welcome the spring. In fact, it is a warning to the world that no matter luxury or poverty, no matter prosperous or dark, everything will pass, and only friendship and family love will last forever in the heart.
