Recently, news in mainland China has exposed reports of smog weather one after another, from Harbin and Shenyang in northern Cambodia to the southwest. In Chengdu and Chongqing, from the capital Beijing and adjacent Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi to Shanghai and Nanjing in the south of the Yangtze River, highways were closed, planes were grounded, and schools were suspended due to haze weather. Many people wore masks to reduce the inhalation of toxic air. Netizens joked that the situation was so serious that the dog could not be seen when it was stalking a dog, and the person could not be seen shaking hands. This was a bit excessive. But a set of comparative photos taken near Beijing's CCTV truly reflects the severity of the smog. I remember when I was in school, the teacher once told us the "Story of Fog London", which was the harm brought to the people by the early industrial revolution in Britain. We have vowed not to follow the same path of old imperialism. Therefore, when China's reform and opening up and its economy entered the early stage of take-off, when studying the national development plan, it was emphasized that it should follow the path of sustainable development, pay attention to protecting the environment on which mankind depends, and not cause harm to future generations through economic development. Thirty years have passed, and China's economy has achieved sustained and rapid development, but in exchange for this, haze weather has spread almost across the country. In such a huge China, except for Xizang and a few remote areas, it is difficult for people to find a clean land (I just heard that the Potala Palace and Hainan were destroyed by smog). Fog London became today’s ‘Fog China’. Our country has not been able to get rid of the harm caused by rapid economic development. Neither the Three Represents nor the Scientific Outlook on Development can withstand the erosion of the big bug of economic development. How can we talk about a harmonious society when people can't even breathe fresh air?

Corruption is another major hazard in China's development. Like smog, corruption has become more and more intense in the past thirty years, embezzling a large amount of people's wealth and eroding the national body. The exposed facts show that: from village chiefs to county heads, provincial and ministerial officials to Politburo members, medical staff to warehouse managers, many people use the power and opportunities in their hands to seek personal gain for individuals or small groups. In the past, when we came to the United States for inspection, we felt that the products in American showcases were extremely expensive. With our pocket money when we went abroad, we could only buy a piece of chocolate and a small souvenir medal to share with our family and good friends. Once upon a time, Chinese tour groups had become important customers of American brand-name stores, and the per capita consumption of Chinese tourists exceeded US$7,000. We overseas Chinese often feel short of money when we return home to see old friends. It is undeniable that people's income has greatly increased in recent years, and some people have become rich first, but most people's monthly salary income still does not exceed one thousand US dollars, so how can they be so generous. I believe that many people who go abroad use public funds for consumption and use various means to reimburse themselves at companies or units. It has almost become a trend for the whole people to share the national wealth. Everyone eats and drinks, treats guests and gives gifts. However, a few powerful people have entered communism in advance, everyone does his best and gets what he needs. I remember that in the 1950s, when I had just graduated from school and started working, my father bought me twenty stamped letterheads and asked me to send a letter home every month. He also warned me not to use public envelopes and stationery, and that I must distinguish between public and private matters. Later, when I urgently wiped my butt with a piece of public letterhead (most Chinese people didn't have the habit of buying toilet paper at that time), I felt really guilty. My father was an old employee who grew up during the Republic of China. He used traditional Chinese moral concepts to educate the next generation. After experiencing the catastrophe of the Cultural Revolution, an old world was shattered and a new world was not established. The education of benevolence, justice, etiquette, wisdom, and trust no longer existed. There was no distinction between public and private affairs, and national moral education was seriously lacking. This is one of the historical and social roots of the rampant corruption in China today.

Smog and corruption have become two big mountains in the progress of Chinese society and huge obstacles to the realization of the Chinese Dream. In the field of life, people need fresh air every day. In the political field, people need a fair, just and moral society. Frankly speaking, the fact that the problem has become so widespread and serious today is by no means a short-term development. Former national leaders are responsible for this. I hope that we will not just dwell on writing books and expounding on our achievements when we were in power, but we should also reflect on our shortcomings and mistakes when we were in power, and review ourselves for the benefit of future generations. It can be seen that this government is declaring war on corruption in a serious and solid manner, hoping to completely eliminate the cancer and return China to a clean society. We also hope that this government will get rid of the troubles of GDP growth and give the people a clean and good environment for survival.
