Farewell ceremonies for two Yuma County Border Patrol agents who died in the line of duty last week were held on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. They were killed when their SUV collided with a train while chasing drug dealers on May 12. Statistics released by the FBI on the 16th showed that 56 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty across the United States last year, eight more than in 2009. Among the 56 police officers killed, except for one who was hit by a car, the rest were shot to death. 38 of them were wearing body armor when they were killed. Preliminary FBI data shows that 15 of the murdered officers were ambushed, eight died while investigating suspicious persons, seven died during vehicle pursuits or stops, six died while responding to a disturbance, and the rest died in other law enforcement duties. Additionally, 72 police officers died in accidents last year, a 50 percent increase from 48 in 2009. The number of police officers murdered and killed in accidents was 48 each in 2009.
